Take precaution around Unagi Oval

Letters

THIS is a warning to the public in Port Moresby who commute everyday through the Unagi Oval bus stop at Gordon to take precaution when taking that route.
There is a surge in organised petty criminal activities.
There are some rogue and uncivilised vermin who plan and execute bag-snatching, pick-pocketing and disturbing the peace.
These vermin use the end of the Unagi Oval, where there’s a slope leading down to the main bus stop, to consume marijuana and stand on top of that slope to scope out their next target.
These people are from the same place from the settlements around Gordon, Erima, 6-Mile and 5-Mile.
They are a five-men group stationed at certain areas where they can blend in with the crowd before attacking unsuspecting individuals.
To people travelling to Gordon, avoid walking in crowded areas.
Doing so would make their job easier in mugging you.
When they see a person walking alone, they walk up to him/her, one member goes and taps his/her shoulder and when the person turns, the one who taps starts a fake conversation to cause distraction before to surrounding the victim and a knife or other sharp objects are used if the victim tries to put up a fight.
Due to the rainy season and that area being all wet and muddy, commuters struggle to walk at a normal pace.
While commuters take their time walking through the muddy parts of the bus stop, these vermin take advantage and properly study their target before striking.
Vehicles passing by the road adjacent to the Unagi Oval bus stop should also take precaution.
There is lack of police manpower at the moment due to Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare’s funeral activities so please take care of yourselves because it’s only going to get worse.
Apart from that slope, take precaution when walking at the side of the Eda Ranu office, through the roadside vegetable markets and the markets at the side of the route 17, 13, and 4 bus stops, including the 8-Mile and 9-Mile bus stops.
