Tanker jam … Traffic into the Porgera gold mine in Enga province was brought to a standstill on Saturday after a fuel tanker got stuck, obstructing the entire road near Pogemo River between Paeam and Porgera station. The tanker, owned by Ipili Porgera Investments, was transporting fuel from Lae when it got stuck at 8am. A member of the Mt Hagen-based police mobile squad 6, Frank Daniels, told The National at the scene that the driver could not overcome the slippery slope. The driver acted quickly to put the tanker right across the road to avoid crashing into Pogemo River. According to a man who only wished to be identified by his first name, Kevin, the incident was the fourth involving tankers on the same section of the road. “This section of the road needs rerouting or rebuilding to avoid further serious accidents.” The road was reopened at 2.45pm after three small tankers drained out the fuel from the tanker for delivery to the mine site.
