HEKARI Tarangau (2) take on Tarangau (3) in their MRDC Port Moresby 9s quarterfinal clash at the National Football Stadium (NFS) Oval 2 tomorrow.
The club who are the defending champions of the Mineral Resource Development Company-sponsored competition had three teams in the men’s division so a clash against one of their own was always cards.
Tarangau (2) finished on top of their pool (A) with three wins in last week’s opening clashes.
Tarangau (2) comprise members of cup winning side from last year while Tarangau (3) comprises the club’s U20s.
Tarangaus president Joe Yamason, pictured, said the clash would be interesting even though it was not one they wanted.
“We’ve got two of our teams playing each other in the quarterfinals. It’s not something we wanted but that is the draw,” Yamason said.
“That’s how the organisers have made the draws so we’ll see how the game goes.
Yamason said he expected Tarangau (2) to have too much fire power for team three but he would not rule out a surprise given the way a nines game could change in a short space of time.
“Tarangau two are the defending champions so you would expect them to be the better side and our team three are made up of our U20s. But I’m sure our young guys will give it their best against their seniors.”
Yamason regardless of the result they would have a team advance to the semifinals for the cup while the loser would play for the plate.
Yamason said their main focus was push for final to have a chance to defend the cup.
“As long as we get a team into the final that’s what we are aiming for.
“Tarangau (2) will be led by Agmark Gurias flyer Jojo Forova and they have that understanding from last year as well as being mostly A grade players so we expect them to go far in the finals.”
