TB in prisons a serious matter

Letters

It is disturbing to read in yesterday’s paper about the tuberculosis situation at Buimo Jail in Lae and possibly in other jails across Papua New Guinea.
This is likely one of the many reasons pushing prisoners to escape.
We have the non-government organisations (NGOs) and church-based agencies that have TB as their core agenda. I wonder if their services are used to the fullest.
I am a former NGO worker and know help is there to address this disease.
It depends on leaders to identify and make the connection, and meet administrative requirements.
Eradication of TB is directly connected to the uplifting of living standards. This means a real head ache for the short-term.
This is where connectivity of all stakeholders comes in. Can provincial leaders, MPs, church leaders and NGOs come together to understand the issue and address it together? The same question also needs to be addressed by the Correctional Service at a national level.
