A SECONDARY school teacher was charged in the Wewak District Court with bashing to death a 19-year-old grade 7 student whom he suspected was having an affair with his wife, East Sepik commander Supt Albert Beli says.
“The 26-year-old teacher is now in custody for allegedly using a piece of wood to kill the student from Turubu local level government’s Kep village in Wewak,” he said.
Supt Beli said the teacher was suspicious of the student and he allegedly got drunk on April 10 at about 3.30pm and hit the student on the head multiple times with the piece of wood.
“People nearby quickly intervened to stop the teacher. They took the student to Wewak General Hospital to receive treatment as an outpatient,” he said.
“When discharged and returned to his village, the student complained of headaches, dizziness and body aches.
“He was rushed to the hospital on April 14 where he died in the emergency ward.”
The teacher was arrested and charged with murder in court.
Supt Beli said the student’s murder was one of three reported in this month with the arrest of six suspects.
In another incident, a father was beheaded and his son died from multiple injuries in Vanimo Hospital after being ambushed by four suspects allegedly over a land dispute in Smain village at the East-West Sepik border.
“The 70-year-old father died instantly and his 26-year-old son died later from severe multiple body injuries after they were ambushed by four men at 11am on March 31,” Supt Beli said.
