TEACHERS in the Ramu area were treated to free professional development, especially in the teaching of phonics, for elementary teachers and schools by Bilum Books.
Bilum Books is the publishing company that was launched in Kiunga in April.
Irene Sawczak, from Bilum Books, said the company last Friday  conducted a one-day workshop on phonics, vocabulary development, spelling and word study in Ramu.
“Over 50 elementary and primary teachers from the Ramu area attended the workshop,” she said.
“The workshop’s aim was to show teachers how to use the new Bilum Books standard-based resources with confidence and understanding.”
The Ramu workshop was sponsored by Ramu Agri Industries Ltd and was organised by Les Potter, principal of Ramu International Primary School.
In addition to sponsoring the workshop, Ramu Agro Industries purchased a set of Bilum Books – phonics books, for every elementary school taking part and a set of Bilum Books – spelling & word study books, for every primary school – a very generous gift appreciated by all participants.
Those attending expressed their gratitude for the insight that the workshops gave them about teaching phonics as prescribed in the Education Department’s elementary English syllabus and teacher guides.
They felt the Bilum Books’ student books and teacher guides for elementary prep, E1 and E2 were very relevant and complemented the new syllabus.
More workshops have been planned for this month.
Teachers are welcome to attend these free workshops to enhance their teaching ability:
Madang (June 20-21) – Rebecca Giffard: 71198558); Wewak (June 23-24) –Abel Namatu (71853073) and Port Moresby (June 27-29) – Elizabeth Kosi on 72228417.
