Teachers colleges, technical institutes move to DHERST

FOURTEEN teachers colleges, 10 technical and polytechnic institutions which were previously under the Education Department, will now be under the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra says.
He said the National Executive Council had already approved a submission from DHERST regarding this change in 2017.
Dr Kombra clarified that the Papua New Guinea Education Institute and Callan Inclusive Education would still remain under the Education Department while the teacher in-service function would remain under the Education Department as well.
He said the institutions that would be transferred to DHERST were under the Education Department since the country’s education system was established in the 1970s.
Two of the teachers colleges were under the Education Department, three were under provincial governments while the other nine were under church agencies.
“We have a technical group that has been working between DHERST and us on the necessary transfer protocols,” Dr Kombra said.
“The bill for the transfer has been endorsed by Cabinet and is going to be presented hopefully in the next session of Parliament.”

  • What about new colleges that are yet to be registered? Allow dherst to quality check on these colleges and register there. The education department is very slow in registering them.

  • Have the Teachers college Lecturers position advertised to have lecturers being appointed on merit. Papua New Guinea Teachers Colleges need lectures with masters Degree in the field of Education and with experience of 15 years of teaching experiences.
