Teachers colleges to offer degrees

TEACHERS colleges throughout the country will offer the bachelor of education in primary teaching programme next year.
This will give teachers an opportunity to apply for the degree programme at colleges in the respective provinces.
The Holy Trinity Teachers College (HTTC) in Mt Hagen was the first to take on board the bachelor in education in primary teaching in 2014.
Representatives from four teacher colleges in the Highlands – Enga (Enga), Nipa (Southern Highlands), Nazarene (Jiwaka) and Chimbu (Chimbu) – attended a one-day meeting on Aug 23 with the management of the HTTC to share ideas, views and experiences on how to introduce the degree programme next year.
The gathering was attended by college principals, deputy principals and senior lecturers.
The main agenda discussed was the national curriculum and the revision of the programme specification document (PSD) currently used in primary teachers colleges.
HTTC deputy principal (administration) Tulle James said the gathering was also to prepare the colleges for the national curriculum review was from Aug 26-28.
HTTC principal Michael Miamel said this would improve the quality of primary school teaching in the long run.
“We need make this work so that can increase the standard of learning and our children can receive a better education,” he said.
“Once graduating with a degree in primary teaching, I believe many teachers will give the best to the students back in the classrooms.”
