Teachers learn about child protection during course

Education

FIFTEEN teachers from eight primary schools in Port Moresby attended a teachers’ workshop facilitated by Equal Playing Field last week.
The teachers were from Koiari, Holy Rosary, Hohola, St Francis, Koki, Bomana, Bavaroko and Ted Diro primary schools.
Ten of the teachers recently attended a human rights training in the Solomon Islands through an agreement with the Education Department.
The department recognised the need for teachers to enhance their capacity in child protection and school gender based violence (SGBV) training for the PNG teaching environment.
The department approached Equal Playing Field to run the two-day teacher training program.
Teachers learned strategies and effective methods aimed at enhancing their understanding and better enabling them to identify students within their schools who maybe susceptive to SGBV and abuse.
EPF’s ‘safe schools initiative’ equiped teachers with the knowledge of child protection and how it translated into their schools and how to identify students facing the issues.
It also offers teachers a collaborative forum to network with other schools and together plan and strategise how to address SGBV and abuse of students.
