Teachers’ performance

Letters

I BRING my concern to the attention of the Education Department regarding the performance of teachers at Kaugere Primary and Elementary School in Moresby South electorate in NCD. Last Friday’s (Aug 16) poor staff attendance prompted me to break the silence.
Half the students were deprived of their right to education when they were sent home because 13 teachers did not turn up for work.
Teacher absenteeism and lack of professionalism and conduct is an ongoing problem currently happening in the school which is affecting the education of many students.
Due to the culture of silence, the community and other faithful staff cannot report this matter to the relevant authorities.
When teachers who are public servants are absent from work without valid reasons, they still get full pay which is simply stealing from the government and it is criminal and unfair.
A few teachers have been absent for longer periods and yet they are not penalised.
The command and control is lacking and the relevant authorities should intervene to restore normalcy in the rank and file.
Our children deserve a better education for a better future and such poor work ethics by teachers is unacceptable.
