TEACHERS in Jiwaka are flocking to the Education Division office to fill in their National Identification (NID) forms, a requirement this year if they want to get paid.
Provincial education adviser Erwin Us said Education Department officer Jim Mond was in the province to help teachers register their data on the teachers’ summary sheet.
On Tuesday, 150 elementary school teachers turned up.
Us said the directive from the National Planning and Monitoring Minister Richard Maru and Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra was for all teachers and public servants to get registered before March 31.
“We have nearly 2000 teachers in elementary, primary, high, secondary and Tvet schools in Jiwaka,” he said.
“While they are still on holidays, we’ve notified them to come here to register. This is very important. It’s their bread and butter,” Us said.
Mond said public servants from other departments were doing the same.
“Tuesday was our first day. It was like an awareness but we progressed well and registered about 150 elementary teachers,” he said.
“By the end of this week, we are expected to complete the registration of about a quarter of the teachers in Jiwaka. We will come back in the next round and get everyone registered before March.”
He said the information teachers entered would be used to verify their identities in the payroll system.
“We want to know who is (employed) in the education department to prevent the duplication of names and the wastage of taxpayers’ money being paid to ghost teachers,” Mond said.
