Teachers threaten to go on strike

TEACHERS in Western Highlands are thinking of going on strike to support the 50 teachers who have lost their places.
PNG Teachers’ Association Highlands regional secretary John Melson said those teachers should be given back their job.
He said it was against the Teaching Service Commission Act to displace serving teachers unless they were found guilty of an offence.
The chairman of the Western Highlands provincial education board, Lawrence Pena, said he had no comment to make.
Melson said more than 50 teachers in Western Highlands found out during the start of the school year that their positions had been given to new teachers.
“To make things easy for everyone, the PEB must give teaching positions back to the serving teachers now displaced,” he said.
