Teachers urged to register

THE second phase of the Morobe teachers’ National Identity (NID) registration has started and teachers who are not yet registered have been urged to enter the system.
Provincial senior primary school inspector Keith Tangui said it was important that teachers from all levels – elementary, primary, high and secondary schools, technical, private and special education schools – registered with the programme. “If you are not registered by the end of the year, you will likely miss out on benefits associated with being in the system such as your salary,” he said.
“The new education system requiring teachers to be paid according to their National Identity registration.”
Tangui said the registration process had been hindered by wet weather in Lae but he expected teachers in the province to come to the provincial capital to register.
The programme started this week and will on July 12.
He inspectors of the province’s nine districts had been briefed on the exercise and expected the information to be relayed to teachers across the spectrum of schools and institutions.
Tangui estimated that by the end of the week, more than 1,500 teachers in the province would be registered.
“In the first phase, we had over 500 teachers registered and we’re hoping to have a bigger number for the second phase,” he said.
“We aim to have over 3000 teachers registered by the end of next week.”
Tangusaid NID registration would still be available for teachers who missed out this month as they would have until Dec 31 to do so.
He said NID officers were prepared to go to the rural areas to carry out registration but it was up to the Education Department to facilitate that exercise.
NID Lae office and Morobe operation team leader Ken Yuafoho told The National that the Education Department had signed a memorandum of understanding with the office in this regard.
