EDUCATION Minister James Marape has warned that the failure by teachers to complete their resumption forms by the end of this month will indicate that the positions are vacant.

He said if the resumption forms were not received by the end of June, the Education Department would assume that the teaching positions were vacant.

He said since since the start of school in January more than 14,000 teachers throughout the country had been put off the payroll.

“A total of 48,018 teachers are currently on the payroll, however only 33,827 submitted their resumption forms to confirm that they have resumed duty while some 14,191 teachers resumption forms are still outstanding and not yet received at the head office,” Marape said in a statement.

He said as a consequence of failure to submit the required forms, 8,779 teachers were suspended from the payroll in April.

Only 1,894 had submitted their forms following that action.

He urged teachers currently suspended from the payroll to complete their resumption forms if they wanted to keep their jobs and get paid.

The current total number of teachers suspended from the payroll stands at 6,885.

The five provinces leading the list of suspensions are Morobe with 1,304 teachers, Southern Highlands with 1,263, Bougainville with 844, Western Highlands with 740 and Madang with 506.

The Education Department has advised all provincial education advisers to ensure all teachers completed and submit their resumption forms on time to the department.
