Teaching lawyers

THE University of Papua New Guinea is the premier university of the Pacific and produces great leaders who are now spearheading PNG growth both in the public and private domain.
UPNG is proud to have produced five prime ministers and about 90 per cent of senior cabinet ministers, governors and MPs. All are UPNG products.
Therefore, the School of Law, the university council and other relevant bodies should change the selection criteria because the standard has dropped.
The graduates are not performing to expectations and the global audience can see that.
The university council and relevant bodies should limit the selection of grade 12 leavers, meaning take fewer grade 12s and get more first degree holders or experienced people.
This approach can help arrest the decline in standards. We know that at the National and Supreme courts, lawyers often fail to attend to their cases, inviting the ire of judges who see the behaviour as a sign of incompetency at the highest level of the judiciary.
To fix this problem we need to lift the bar and raise the entry requirements at UPNG to cut down on the number of entries from grade 12 leavers and encourage more degree 1 students to enter.
In this way we can boost the competency level.
Together we can build PNG for better!
