Teaching standards

Letters

THE standard-based school curriculum (SBC) is being reintroduced into PNG’s education mainstream. The curriculum will not work if the core functions of the trainees and trainers in primary school teachers’ colleges do not change to suit the new system.
Every student selected to go to a teachers’ college should be a grade 12 graduate or has been through grade 12 matriculation level and should have chosen a specialised subject while doing grade 12.
Not all students accepted to teachers’ colleges are good in all the subjects, but after graduating they are required to teach seven to eight subjects.
As a teacher I know that teachers do not teach well the subjects they are not good at and they will usually skip to the subject they are confident in.
The Education Department should make primary school teachers’ colleges provide specialised courses.
For the standard-based curriculum to meet our Vision 2050 goals, our young teachers should teach in their specialty areas plus an elective subject.
Only after we have done this will teaching standards improve.
