Team ENB docked for cheating
The National, Wednesday 21st November, 2012
TEAM East New Britain men’s hockey were disqualified and a point given to their opponents after fielding non-eligible players.
They were denied a win in their opening match against Madang yesterday after fielding three outsiders.
Former PNG Hockey Federation vice-president Raymond Lapun played with ENB along with two POM-based players yesterday.
After scoring the first goal, the three players were asked to leave by the referee and were replaced by local players, but at full time ENB still won the game 3-1.
Not satisfied, Madang brought the issue up at a brief technical officials meeting which later found out that according to the games charter, players must be in a province for at least six months to be eligible to represent that province.
It was found out Lapun did not meet that requirement therefore ENB was disqualified and the point were awarded to Madang.
