GOVERNOR-GENERAL Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae praised Team Papua New Guinea for using the power of sports to fly the national flag on the international stage in the recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
“Despite the challenges and setbacks faced along the way, you have persevered through dedication and excellence, and I commend you,” Dadae said during a welcome reception for the team.
“The true power of sports is to bring people, villages, communities and nations together.
“Many of you have gone to break your personal bests and national records in your respective sports.
“Your successes and personal bests will set a baseline for you and future generations. You’re an integral part in our success stories in building the nation.”
Dadae acknowledged the athletes, officials, national federations and sponsors for helping ensure the team’s participation in Birmingham.
Meanwhile, chef de mission Michael Henao said Team PNG brought home their sole medal – a silver won by weightlifter Morea Baru in the 61kg division.
“PNG finished 35 out of 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth,” he said.
“In our region, excluding Australia and New Zealand, we finished third behind Samoa and Fiji.
“Eighty per cent of the 33 athletes made their debut on the international stage, and we are passing the baton to the next generation of PNG athletes. In addition to bringing a medal home, Team PNG brought some achievements of personal bests, season’s bests and new national records.” Team PNG’s overseas-based athletes have returned to their respective locations while the local athletes reunited with their families.
They will continue preparations for next year’s Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
