THE head of Team PNG medical support group Dr Kapua Kapua and head physiotherapist Matthew Natusch visited the national athletic squad last weekend at their National Sports Institute, Goroka base.
The visit was part of the PNG Olympic Committee’s programme of screening all sports.
Dr Kapua said he was hugely impressed with the fitness levels of the athletes which were “through the roof”.
He said it was clearly evident that the training programme run by head coach Dior Lowry was working very well.
His main concern was nutrition and stressed to Athletics PNG president Tony Green and the coaches the importance of athletes getting the right quantity and quality of food. Natusch, who has a long association with sports in PNG having been involved with the PNG Kumuls in the earlier 2000s, was also able to provide advice and assistance to local physiotherapist Monsy Uvire, who has been with the athletes on a fulltime basis since last September and has developed a good relationship with them. Natusch thanked the athletics team and the institute through director Janet Gimots for their assistance, adding that the facilities were ideal.
He said that the visit went well and there were no major issues with the athletes.
Athletics PNG is expected to announce its Pacific Games squad after the final trial next month.
