TEAM SHP will announce its soccer squad this week for the PNG Games in Port Moresby next month.
Mendi Soccer Association president Frank Ank told The National that he would announce the squad following the successful weekend-long soccer tournament which just ended.
He said the tournament, sponsored by Petroleum Resource Kutubu (PRK) and MRDC, attracted teams from all districts of Southern Highlands.
The teams came from as far as Kagua, Erave, Pangia and Ialibu from eastern part of the province as well as Lake Kutubu, Tari, Margarima from western side of the province.
Ank said PRK was one of the major supporters of sports in PNG.
The president thanked businessman John Kapi Natto, who is the board member for taking great interest in supporting soccer in the province. Although, Kapi-Natto has his own franchise team, Hekari United FC in the semi-professional soccer league, he still had a heart for his fellow Southern Highlanders by getting his PRK group to support soccer in the province.
Ank commended Kapi-Natto for being a true Southern Highlander to back soccer.
Team SHP will take part in soccer, kickboxing, basketball, rugby 9s, touch and darts,
Team SHP is also appealing to all Southern Highlands parliamentarians to honor their commitment, a provincial executive council decision to donate  K10,000 to the team management.
He said so far only two Southern Highlands MPs had allocated some funds to their cause while others, including Governor Anderson Agiru had yet to allocate any funds for team SHP.
With the PNG Games fast appraoching,  many provinces may find it neccessary to cut down on the number of competitors in their contingents.
Sports may also be culled from the provincial teams if funding is not sourced quickly to pay for travel and lodging.
