Team to act quickly on inquiry report

National, Normal

THE National Executive Council has endorsed the recommendations of the final report into the Commission of Inquiry into the Finance Department.
A team is expected to be set up quickly with the task of ensuring the recommendations are implemented, including bringing to justice those implicated in the inquiry.
NEC’s endorsement of the report clears it to be tabled in Parliament.
The team to implement the report would get to work quickly while awaiting the tabling of the report in Parliament next March, a Government source said.
While the report has not been formally released to the public, copies of it have been circulated around.
Amongst those implicated in the report are at least two departmental heads, one Member of Parliament, a number of former and current public servants, and a number of law firms.
One departmental head has been recommended for instant dismissal. This departmental head is also to be referred to the police fraud squad and the Ombudsman Commission.
Similar recommendations were made for the other departmental head.
The Proceeds of Crimes Act is to apply to some of those implicated, to recover monies allegedly misappropriated.
Several law firms face being referred to the PNG Law Society for disciplinary actions.
