THE body of a 14-year-old girl who was raped then killed in East Sepik was found after two days in her family garden, according to police.

Police in Wosera-Gawi district, East Sepik, said the gruesome events occurred at Kaugia village in the North Wosera local level government.

A man is in custody over the case.

Acting district police station commander Senior Const Francis Paiul said the girl had gone to a nearby creek to do

her laundry when she was attacked.

“She had gone to the creek last Monday around 4pm and, while doing her laundry, she was approached by the suspect who attacked, raped and killed her,” Paiul said.

He said her relatives had been looking for her everywhere since last Monday afternoon.

They found her body in the family garden on Wednesday afternoon.

Paiul told The National in Wewak last night that police had inspected the scene where the girl was raped and killed.

They believe that a sharp object was used to kill her.

Paiul said the suspect was being questioned at the Wosera-Gawi police station and would be transferred to Wewak main police station.

The girl was buried on Thursday afternoon.

Paiul warned young girls and mothers in the district to walk in groups during late hours, saying men now have no respect for women.

“I am calling on Wosera-Gawi MP Jerry Yopiyopi to look into the law and order problem in the district by upgrading the police station,” Paiul said.

He said police in the district could not do much because of lack of man power and logistic support.

Currently situation in the area is still tense however, police are monitoring the situation.
