Teenage Varage, a star in the making

 SIXTEEN-year-old John Wari Varage is a star in the making and only requires an expert to notice and nurture the talent within. 

From his primary education at Koroboro International School the all rounder from Waira Vanua, Aroma Coast, Central, was sportsman of the year in 2011 and 2012.

He participated in rugby union, rugby league and athletics, specialising in the cross country event and has won it 11 times in a row. Last year he broke the record in the cross country and also the 200 metres sprint in the inter-school carnival.

He is now attending Grade 10 at Port Moresby International School and is confident to continue winning in the cross country marathon.

This is history in making for the youngster, who is predicted as be one of Papua New Guinea’s new find in long distance running at this tender age. 

His talents has yet to be discovered by the PNG Athletics Union and PNG Olympic Committee and even Port Moresby Athletics Association.

The Aroma Coast lad should be the next Raka Vele from Hula, Central who represented PNG in the marathon in the South Pacific Games.

He recently played in the Waira Vanua Rugby League tournament in the junior division and was named the player of the tournament and was presented K300 by Abau MP Sir Puka Temu.

The youngster played an important role to lead his team to win the junior division Sir PukaTemu Cup.

The youngster’s father Wari Varage who is also a prominent rugby league administrator and deputy chairman of Port Moresby Rugby League is proud of his son’s achievement.
