ASSISTANT Police Commissioner Teddy Tei says lack of resources is hindering operations.
He highlighted some of the challenges encountered by the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary during a two-day consultative meeting jointly hosted by the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council and the office of the High Commission on Human Rights in Port Moresby yesterday.
Tei said officers failed to carry out their duties in investigating cases because they did not have vehicles.
He said the legal 24-hour timeframe for processing detainees was insufficient to conduct investigations.
He suggested an extension of time to give ample room to carry out investigations.
Tei said many people did
not know their rights and
were deprived of their rights at the hands of police.
In his address as a keynote speaker, he revealed that some detainees were detained without being formally charged or arrested.
He said these were some of the policing areas that needed to be addressed.
