Telefomin prepare for sports tourney

VILLAGES and sporting groups in the Telefomin district of Sandaun province are gearing for the 4th Mini Sports tournament that will take place during the festive season.
The district will come alive once more during the Christmas and New Year period with the five-day tournament that will be held from Dec 28 to Jan 1.
The tournament will feature a total of 40 teams, including some from the nearby Western province that will be competing in volleyball and soccer. 
During the games, the HIV/AIDS department of the Baptist Union of PNG (BUPNG) and the Youth Sanap Wantaim Sports Programme of AusAID will be at the scene to create awareness and participate in the sports carnival.
The team from Baptist Union HIV/AIDS will carry out programmes like HIV/AIDS awareness and promote the Youth Sanap Wantaim Sports programme, as well as show how the two programmes inter-relate in promoting a meaningful community living.
Organising committee chairman Solan Mirism, accompanied be another official, said that 18 men’s soccer teams and 22 women’s volleyball teams would be participating in the event.
Meanwhile, the local organising committee is calling on all participating teams to complete their registration fees before Friday.
