THE Tembari Children’s Care (TCC) will mark its 9th anniversary on Saturday with an open house to showcase its modest progress since 2010 when supporters and donors began coming in.
Founded in 2003 with no support at all, the day care facility began its three-times-a week feeding programme with a handful of street children from the Oro settlement at 7-Mile, outside Port Moresby.
“This year’s celebration will allow us to show the centre’s progress from 2010 when our generous sponsors and supporters began coming in with assistance,” Tembari founder Penny Sage-embo said.
Now, Tembari is looking after about 170 orphans, abandoned and neglected children, providing them with meals twice a day from Monday to Saturday.
Of the beneficiary children, 40 are receiving preschool education, while about 116 are provided education in Port Moresby’s elementary and primary schools.
The rest of the children are of non-school age from two to three years old.
Many children from families with complete parents are attending preschool at Tembari since it is the only government-recognised community-based organisation operating in the settlement.
Sage-embo said they had invited its donors and supporters from the private sectors as well as individual benefactors to “thank them for their continuing support of Tembari’s programmes”.
The open house begins at 9am after Sagembo has presented Tembari’s overall programme for its beneficiary children.
One of Tembari’s major development projects is the construction of a K100,000 building for its preschool, work on which is expected to begin in the middle of this year.
The school building is a joint project between donors and supporters led by the Australian High Commission, AkzoNobel, Lands Department, Hardware Haus, Eda Ranu and AP Engineering of East New Britain.
