THE Apisahs have won gold in tennis for Papua New Guinea in the women’s team event yesterday after defeating New Caledonia.
A great team effort led by Violet Apisah, who won her singles match against New Caledonian opponent Yaelle Honokoko 6-2, 7-5, opened proceedings.
PNG’s own tennis genius Abigail Tere-Apisah strengthened the effort by defeating the other New Caledonian Anaeve Pain 7-5, 6-2 and claimed gold for the country.
Tahiti won bronze after defeating Fiji ( 6-2, 6-0) (3-6, 2-6) (6-1, 6-2).
“Wow! We just won gold,” was all some spectators could say when they saw that Abigail was leading 5-2 in her second start against Pain.
It was an emotional moment when Abigail finished the game with a courageous score line.
Abigail said she was worried at first when the scores were closer but she had to absorb the pressure to win the first set.
“In the second start, I know I performed well because I had the crowd behind me that had really boosted me in playing more cleverly,” Abigail said.
