NATIONAL tennis champion Abigail Tere-Apisah is aiming a spot at next year’s Olympics in Japan as she continues her training from home during the Covid-19 state of emergency (SOE).
Tere-Apisah told The National last week that the Olympics were a big part of her plans for this year, however, the pandemic had forced the deferral of the Olympics.
“My biggest goal for this year was to qualify for the Olympics which have now been moved to next year,” she said.
“Like many of the sporting activities in PNG and around the world, tennis has also been suspend for now and is set to restart on July 13 but this date could likely be pushed back depending on the Covid-19 situation.
“My training has definitely been affected since coming back from Australia. I had to self-isolate for two weeks so I wasn’t able to get on the court or access the gym.
“I’ve mainly been in the gym trying to maintain my fitness and strength.
“It’s been tough trying to get some tennis court time with the SOE in place.
“But it’s also been nice to spend time with my family and friends during this period.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty for tennis at the moment.
“I’m just trying to take things day by day and make sure I’m in the gym doing some strength exercises
“So when I’m able to get back on court, I can focus on tennis without feeling like I have to play catch-up.”
