Papua New Guinea’s No.1 female tennis player Abigail Tere-Apisah and Japan’s Junri Namigata won the doubles final in the Hong Kong Prudential Women’s $25K International Tennis Federation Tour event at the Victoria Park Tennis Centre over the weekend.
Much of the Hong Kong tournament was disrupted by rain forcing delays in matches and also with matches being moved indoor.
Tere-Apisah and Namigata beat Japanese duo Erina Hayashi and Momoko Kobori 6-3, 2-6, 10–6.
Earlier, Tere-Apisah lost in the second round of the singles event to Japan’s Erina Hayashi who went on to win the final.
She said the weather disruptions and change in venues from outdoor to indoor were factors that had contributed to her poor campaign in the singles event.
“It rained all week, a lot of our matches were delayed and there was a lot of waiting around which was tiring,” Tere-Apisah said.
“I played my first match on Tuesday (May 28) at 8pm because it rained all morning and afternoon.
“I did not get to play my second round until Friday.
“Because it was still raining, matches were moved indoors.
“I didn’t quite sit well with the idea that there was a lot of changes and delays, I went into my match a little annoyed and frustrated.
“The week was tiring and stressful for me.
“That’s why I’m super happy that I was able to finish the week on a positive note and capture the doubles title.
“Three finals in three weeks, I’m proud of my efforts.”
Tere-Apisah said she was now back at training before making a decision to travel to Jakarta for one more tournament ahead of the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, next month.
