NELSON Terema is the new National Road Safety Council executive director.
He takes over from Frank Aku whose employment expired on Sept 9.
Terema was recruited in 1999 when the council was first established.
His main focus would be to put emphasis on road safety awareness to educate the public on basic road rules to minimise on road accidents.
He said accidents were avoidable but people failed to practise simple road rules and regulations. It would mean targeting drivers, commuters, pedestrians and other road users.
He said they were currently busy with the Christmas operations.
Terema has held a senior management position with the council in the past 14 years and said the job was not new to him.
