The honesty of acting PM will prevail
The National – Tuesday, July 12, 2011
Despite PNG’s pragmatic and fledgling democracy facing tough times, the political leadership by the acting prime minister seems decisive and mature in putting the interest of the country and its people first.
If he were to relinquish the office due to the pressure from within and outside, there will be instability.
Given the enormity of challenges he is facing, Sam Abal has done well as the acting prime minister to contain them and conventional wisdom follows suit.
The present legal loopholes surrounding his legitimacy could be the result of his unselfish and honest traits.
One thing that favours Abal is his candid approach and maturity to handle issues as if he were there before.
The recent decision to sack two ministers may not have been his choice, but politically motivated from within.
Such move is part and parcel of our multi-party liberal democratic system that leaders now and in future must always be prepared for.
Over-exaggeration in interpreting the laws must not take precedence over conventional wisdom and stability as this can bring about political uncertainty which will affect policy implementation and investors’ confidence.
