PRIME Minister’s Corporate Golf tournament sponsor The National presented t-shirts for the participants and officials to wear during the tournament next Friday.
The t-shirts were presented to PNG Olympic Committee commercial manager Tania Mairi-Mahuru by The National sales and marketing manager Veronica Marshall at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club yesterday.
This is the second largest fundraising event for PNGOC with the money raised going to support Team PNG’s travel to Apia, Samoa for next year’s Pacific Games.
“We’re grateful with the support The National is showing, sponsoring the event, providing media coverage (advertising) and providing the t-shirts,” Mairi-Mahuru said.
“The newspaper has supported this annual event for the last five years now and PNGOC is grateful because it helps our athletes.
“So far we have 40 teams registered for the tournament already and we’re hoping more teams will register,” she said of registered teams that have paid K3000 each to take part in the September 21 tournament.
Mairi-Mahuru said they expected a large group to travel from about 28 sports on the programme for the 2019 Pacific Games.
“We need about K6 million for our budget and we will still raise some more funds next year,” she said.
The previous fundraising the PNGOC had was the nation-wide Trukai Fun Run in July, while the PM’s Corporate Golf was the last fundraiser for the year.
Marshall said the newspaper was pleased to support PNG athletes who would represent the country and bring medals home.
“Basically we’re supporting the event because it helps Papua New Guinean athletes achieve their goals,” Marshall said.
Marshall said her company would continue the support over the next few years.
“We have receive a lot of support this year so we are hoping that people come out and have a great day and get behind Team PNG,” she said.
The four-man Ambrose tournament will be held on Friday week.
