Air Niugini has suspended its services to Aropa Airport, Kieta, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville from today because of the theft of solar panels at the airport.
These solar panels povide power for the precision approach path indicator lights at the airport.
In a statement, Air Niugini said Aropa Airport would be closed indefinitely. It said the lights were a visual aid that were generally located beside the airport runway.
They provided guidance information to help pilots maintain the correct approach to an airport.
They are a requirement for aircraft operations.
The lights at Aropa Airport were installed recently.
The project was jointly funded by the National Airport Corporation and the Office of the South Bougainville MP.
