Young people must think in global terms and discover themselves as young men and women leaders of tomorrow with responsibility, PNG youth international representative David Stanfield Rupa said.

“One third of the world population is made up of young people,” he reminded people at the World Population Day celebrations on Friday in Port Moresby

If such a number was ignored, there is bound to be a problem, he said. “The problem is there are differences and a gap sometimes between what young people do and what the holders of power and policy do,” Rupa said.

“We believe that if the government, parents and other stakeholders invest in the young people, we will achieve the goals and vision for a safer, healthier and educated young population.”

Rupa said changes in development would take place if young people were included in the 2015 development plans.

As part of the PNG’s National Target’s developed, the Medium Development Goals (MDG’s), and incorporated with the Medium term Development Strategy (MTDS) in 2005-2010.

He said the report showed that PNG was “off track” in achieving the MDG’s despite the national medium term goals.
