A PROVINCIAL police commander in the Highlands has called on motorists to consider the lives of passengers and pedestrians when using public roads.
Chimbu police commander Superintendent Albert Beli was responding to a road accident in Chimbu last week which caused the death of a five-year-old boy.
The boy was walking along the Highlands Highway near Diugl in Kerowagi when a vehicle driven by a community leader from Yuwai in Kundiawa-Gembolg hit him.
Beli said the driver had lost control of the vehicle and hit the boy who was walking beside the road.
The boy died instantly.
“Drivers must think about the lives of people when driving on the road,” Beli said. “Be sober and alert and observe all traffic rules including speed limits.
“You will not get into trouble with the law and members of the community if you follow this advice.”
He said the driver was stopped by a highway patrol unit at Masul in the Sinasina-Yongomulg district.
“The suspect has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and is at the Kundiawa police station cell,” Beli said.
