THIRTY students last Friday received certificates after attending the Small Medium Enterprise Corporation’s (SMEC) six-week garment and textile training programme.
SMEC managing director Petrus Ralda said they realised the importance of the programme.
He said the corporation was a government agency for SME development.
There are a lot of programmes in terms of SME development.
“Garment and textile is a multi-million kina industry in Papua New Guinea,” he said.
“We have a lot of imports and second-hand clothes but sewing is what we do.”
Ralda told the graduates that they had the necessary skills and were urged to discover what potentials they had and combine that with skills that were acquired during the training and contribute to change in their communities.
“We all have a part in the economic development of this nation, we just have to understand which part we play.”
He also announced that they were developing the garment and textile programme into an incubation centre for women entrepreneurship.
“When we get the incubation programme running, we will not only train you, we will incubate your business ideas and you will grow until you are ready to go out as a complete package in the garment and textile industry.
“We have been developing SMEs on an ad-hoc basis without any systematic or structured way.
“But the incubation model is the most systematic and best practice.
“We have done a lot of research and studies around the incubation model.”
