Thousands walk to mark Christ’s death

THOUSANDS of people in Port Moresby, including ardent Catholics, took to the streets last Good Friday morning for the stations-of-the-cross walk from the St Johns Catholic church at Tokarara to Don Bosco Technical School at Gabutu.
The walk with the cross took about four hours.
Among those that walked was Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane.
The walk, which began at Tokarara at about 6.30am, ended at Gabutu at about 11.30am with a mass and an Easter message depicting the theme of Christ Jesus who died on the cross at Calvary to save all of mankind.
Hundreds could not fit into the college’s cathedral and opted for the shade trees outside as mass was said.
Many of the speakers reminded Papua New Guineans about “all our life’s journeys; and that the sweat you have endured during the walk is akin to Christ Jesus’ sweats and hardships”.
Others said the Good Friday walk was “a reminder to all Christians that we should stay focused on God, the Father, because our journey in this life will hold times of frustrations and hardships”.
 “Strive to make Jesus our guide, our strength, our source for strength” was the Easter message on Good Friday.
