VERBAL threats were made following the shooting of five suspects along the Ramu Highway as police are on high alert monitoring the area, says Northern Divisional Commander Peter Guinness.
Asst Police Commissioner (ACP) Guinness said this in an interview yesterday while giving updates of the law and order situation in the region.
“These criminal elements said they would still continue with their armed hold-ups and so, we police are ready to face them and we are closely monitoring them,” he said.
ACP Guinness cautioned those planning another hold-up and robbery that police would use force against them.
“We will not tolerate such activities on the highway and this has to stop and let the travelling public free to move around,” he said.
Meanwhile, he confirmed that there was a police operation taking place in the Transgogol area and officers would talk to the people regarding the law and order situation there.
ACP Guinness alleged that the recent killings in the area were not necessarily cult related but by people hiring cult groups to do the killings over land issues.
“When someone gets angry with another person, they simply go to the ring leaders of the cult and bribe them with money to do the killing.”
ACP Guinness said he suspected the killings were related to land disputes.
He said police had identified the ring leaders of the cult groups and were working to locate, arrest and charge them.
“In the event that police go to arrests the suspects and if they resist, police will do everything to protect themselves and make the arrests.”
