Three dead in shootout

THREE armed men were allegedly shot dead by police in Wewak, East Sepik yesterday, according to police commander Supt Albert Beli.
Supt Beli said bodies of the three men were at the East Sepik health authority’s morgue.
He said the three were believed to be among seven others allegedly preparing to rob business houses at the Boram area.
“The three (deceased) went to Wom (outside Wewak town) to organise a boat to carry out their plan,” he said.
“Police were tipped, thanks to the public for helping police with information that a planned robbery was happening on July 15 around the Boram Airport area.
“Policemen, casually dressed, followed and caught up with the three men at Wom between 6am and 7am.
“There was a shootout and police shot dead three of the armed men,” he said.
Supt Beli urged local communities in the province to report any suspicious movement of people as seven other suspects were armed and at large.
He said three deceased were part of an organised group believed to have recently arrived in the province from Madang.
He also said the same group attempted to hold up the Teachers Savings and Loans Society branch along the Dagua road two weeks ago but had failed.

  • I commend East Sepik Police for job well done. Wewak Town and the surroundings where once a beautiful place to walk and do business, but now such activities threaten the investors to come into the Province especially tourists.

    Comrades job well done…

  • While the work of the police is commended, I hate to see on reports that police are praising the work of the community to report this suspected occurrence. PLEASE….PLEASE…PLEASE, police should always say that a tip off from intel should be enough and nothing else. It thus poses risk to the innocent lives of ordinary people of that community. The repercussions from bad guys to them will be something that can be inevitable. Even if the community assisted in one way, they should always be protected. It is usually the community leaders and elders with their immediate families who are the victims.

    • Spot on, you’re correct. Policemen should know that very well by now. Informers usually tell policemen, OL BOSS MARN,PLIS YUPLA HAITIM ID BLO MI. They even say this for informing policemen to go and disperse the homebrew youths.

  • Good work Police in Wewak. Please protect the community but hide the indenity of the informer.
