At least three people are feared dead with thousands of kina worth of properties destroyed as supporters of a candidate went on a rampage in Wabag, Enga yesterday.
According to security forces and election officials, the damage was caused soon after Don Polye was unseated by Alfred Manase yesterday.
Kandep district returning officer Ben Besawe declared Manase after he managed 24,000 votes after Peter Misin was eliminated which ousted Polye, the Opposition leader until this election. Polye polled 22,000 votes.
Joint police and defence security operation commander Supt Mark Yengen was not available to comment but officers on duty said an angry crowd targeted Enga provincial election steering committee chairman and provincial administrator Dr Samson Amean’s Amala village, claiming  that his position against counting disputed boxes had caused their candidate’s downfall.
The officers said security personnel were guarding Wabag town and that included the provincial government building, BSP  and National Court facilities.
They said the three people who were killed were from the Kandep and Upper Lagaip areas. One of them was an elderly woman.
They said, the offenders were using high-powered guns.
