Three teams ready for sevens
The National, Wednesday September 18th, 2013
THE three East New Britain clubs are primed to push for prominence in the Micah Sports Limited Malangan Barbarians Invitational Sevens tournament.
The Tokua Redskins and Matupit Diggers of Rabaul, plus the Hoodsco Harlequins, from the Gazelle area, have finalised their teams to hunt for the K30,000 Cup winners bounty slated for the Lugagun Beach Oval, Kavieng, New Ireland, from October 1-13.
ENB Rugby Football Union president Tony Namur said the three clubs had finalised their teams and were gearing up to show off some of their new talent.
“Our local competition here is in the play-off stages and the players should be in peak form following our expected grand final on October 5,” Namur said. “We have had two sevens tournaments in the past year with the Tokua Redskins of Rabaul coming out winners, but the promising sign from all the teams is the number of young talent that are featuring at the senior level.”
He said while their juniors did not get a look in at national selection at the 15s level, the opportunity to showcase their talent was in sevens.
“The Malangan Barbarians concept is an ideal opportunity because I believe some of the best in the country will be heading there. I hope national selectors at the junior level will be there as well.” He praised the organisers headed by Ronnie Meli Jr.
