Madang police captured three of the 11 suspects involved in a major theft on Karkar Island on Friday.
Madang police station commander Inspector Vincent Isanda said the 11 men entered Kulkul coconut plantation and stole K21,300 in cash and properties worth more than K25,000.
He said the incident occurred between noon and 2pm. Four of the suspects were believed to be from town while the rest were locals.
Isanda said the robbers used a dinghy to get away and may have gotten off at Kubugam on the Madang North Coast.
He said North Coast rural police from Dylup plantation, following a tip–off from police internal sources, captured three suspects near Banab village who were now locked up at Jomba cells.
Kulkul is part of the Biabi plantation which is a major copra buyer on the island and has been providing external services to the islanders for over 30 years.
A police source said a woman would be also arrested and charged for hindering police work when she yelled and alerted five suspects in a car theft.
Police also reported that a white Toyota Hilux belonging to Hertz Rent a Car was stolen by five men on Saturday.
