Tiensten shooting his own foot

Letters, Normal

PLANNING Minister Paul Tiensten’s outburst against Bougainville and Morobe leaders to guarantee the safety of Japanese aid agencies staff is stupid and shallow.
Everyone knows that law and order is the most serious crisis facing our country today.
This is directly due to, for the minister’s information, the serious lack of capacity in law enforcement agencies.
We have a measly 4,200 policemen and women trying to police 6.5 million people in Papua New Guinea.
Take out your calculator and do the maths, minister!
Those of us who live in Lae know that we are living in relative peace because of the four major private security firms which basically protect the industrial/commercial and even residential properties and lives which the government has failed to fund and allocate sufficient police personnel and vehicles to the Lae police to do their job effectively.
Tiensten is responsible for planning and it is his responsibility to address the severe lack of resources.
The ball is in your court, minister.
