PORT Moresby Viper Ben Wemin says the new Southern Super League National Gaming Control Board Cup is a good development pathway for Digicel Cup teams in the region.
The back told The National yesterday that the Moni Plus-sponsored Vipers would be a stronger Digicel Cup team with the second-tier rugby league competition now in place.
“I’m impressed by the campaign our Port Moresby Vipers Academy players are having so far in the inaugural season,” Wemin said of their ladder-leading development side.
“The future is brighter as more talented players get exposed and prepared for the Digicel Cup.
“Such competition like the Super League provides a platform to keep them together as an academy of players.
“When they remain intact, they build confidence and refine their combinations.
“Knowing there’s a clear pathway to the Digicel Cup, it will inspire them to remain disciplined and committed.”
Wemin said the Super League would not only benefit Southern Digicel Cup teams but the entire inter-city competition.
“Imagine if you keep an academy side for a few years and when they mature into semi-professional players, they’ll set a new standard for the team and competition,” he said.
“It’ll make the Digicel Cup stronger and more competitive.”
Meanwhile, Wemin said he was happy to see the Vipers draw with Laumas at Moresby South Stadium on Saturday.
“The Laumas have a number of Digicel Cup players, including Lae Tigers fullback Sanny Wabo,” he said.
“So I was proud of our academy side who got a good result against the more experienced opposition.”
