NEW South Welshman Lincoln Tighe, pictured, hit 15 under 269 to take out the 2013 Coca-Cola Morobe Open golf yesterday afternoon.

He beat 59 other professional golfers at the Lae golf course to claim the A$18,000 (K40,491) first prize money.

It was a tight contest, with last year’s winner Josh Younger of Victoria, Australia, scoring 14 under 270 to claim A$10,000 (K22,495) in second place, while Queenslander Kurt Carlson was third with 13 under 271 to settle for A$6,720 (K15,116).

Tournament director Peter Boyd said it was the best ever Morobe Open and attracted 26 first-timers among the 60 professionals.

Boyd and fellow amateur Justin Arthur competed the last shoot-out for the amateurs, with Boyd winning.

The event, which attracted professional golfers from Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines, joined the three who represented Papua New Guinea in the five-day annual event.

“Despite having the same number of players from last year it was the best tournament ever compared to the previous year,” Boyd said.

He said unlike 2012 when the tournament ended late in the afternoon the early end this year was an improvement.

He said that gave more time for players to get prepared for the presentation in the evening.
