Time to reflect, says O’Neill

IALIBU-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill says Independence Day, which was celebrated yesterday, is a time for us to reflect as a nation, to give thanks for all that we have achieved in the past 45 years and to make plans to get national development back on track.
“We live in a country of enormous potential, as a place where investors can return and jobs can be restored, it is a country where the strength and courage of our people can continue to make it even better,” the former prime minister said in a statement.
“Papua New Guinea is a great nation and we have already demonstrated that to ourselves and to the world.
“When we built roads, bridges and airports in recent years, our people immediately put these to good use and built businesses and created more jobs.
“Agricultural production grew, new transport companies expanded, small businesses got bigger and people right around the country benefited.
“When we put an additional one million children in schools, families embraced this opportunity, and we were continuing to improve the quality of education.
“We brought major global events to our country that unified people through sport, and we brought the international business community to PNG and made these links stronger.
“Before we hosted Apec, many people around the world did not know where Papua New Guinea was, but after we had been seen in the media in every country of the world many more doors were opened for trade and development.
“This included strengthening our supply chains to transport our goods, improving our security capacity, strengthening biosecurity and many other benefits that will be experienced for generations to come.
“The most important of these being the electrification partnership that will deliver electricity to 70 per cent of our country, and this was negotiated and agreed by our government at Apec and we urge all stakeholders to get this programme up and running.
“There is no doubt that our country has hit a roadblock as resources projects have failed, mines closed for political reasons, and the economy shut down, for which our people have suffered.
“But from this low point the only way is up, it is only by getting back to hardwork and having governments in the future that are capable, decisive and strong that we will move our country forward.
“To all Papua New Guineans, on this 45th anniversary of our independence, I urge you to not lose hope, but to join us and work for the future and the improvements we will once again deliver for today and future generations.”

  • Mr O`Neill, give your full support to this government under the leadership of James Marape as he had been done to you and your government in the last eight years and take this nation forward to prosperity of our generations to come. Most of the populations of this nation have already identified that Mr Marape is a visionary leader and they put their 100% trust in his leadership and rally behind him so you too can put your differences aside, team up with and working towards to fulfil his slogan, Take Back PNG and Make PNG the First Black Richest Christian Nation On Earth.

  • This isn’t an Independence Message at all PO. This is an election campaign of what he has done during his time in the government as a PM. Come on PO. Stop playing scoring game here. This is country’s anniversary day and please celebrate with full mind and heart. Enough of point scoring opportunities and have some positive mind set to assist PM JM today as your PM. Repetition of whatever events done during your past times have been heard over and over and over again and every citizen are having ear sores and head aches. Please can you stop that nonsense.
