Time wasters upset court

The Waigani Committal Court has expressed concern about complainants asking the court to withdraw cases after they have been progressed.
Magistrate Alex Kalandi said there were many such cases and they were a waste of valuable time and resources. He pointed out that instituting and prosecuting court proceedings involved much work and effort of all relevant parties, agencies and personnel such as magistrates, police investigators, police prosecutors, court clerks, lawyers and others.
A complainant and mother of two wrote to the court and appeared before it asking that her case be withdrawn so that her jailed husband can be released.
The mother laid a complaint earlier saying her husband beat her up after suspecting her of having an extra marital affair.
He was arrested and charged with wounding.
She cited as the reasons their children’s need for their father, increased financial difficulties and lack of support to care for their children while he was in jail.
A frustrated Kalandi granted the wife’s request, ordering that the case be withdrawn and the father be released to his family.
