Tip-off leads to escapee’s recapture
AN escapee who was sentenced to 27 years for wilful murder and escaped from Buimo jail last year, was captured by Bulolo police two weeks ago.
Bulolo police reported that Sonny Yauri, while on the run, had been involved in several other crimes.
Morobe police commander Superintendent Alex N’Drasal said on Monday that Yauri was captured at Manam compound in Bulolo after a tip off on May 12.
N’Drasal said when police officers approached the compound, Yauri tried to escape and was shot twice in the legs.
“The escapee was then taken to Bulolo rural hospital and was treated before being detained at the police station in Bulolo,” he said.
He said the suspect was charged with escaping from lawful custody.
Police also alleged that Yauri was also a suspect in an armed robbery and murder at Gawapu village in Mumeng local level government earlier.
“He was captured and charged for armed robbery and murder and while awaiting his court appearances, he escaped again until he was captured by police on May 12”.
N’Drasal said while Yauri was on the run, he was alleged to have involved in some major law and order problems in Bulolo.
He called on prisoners to serve their time and work on being useful members of society.
“You can run but you cannot hide,” he said.
“So turn to God, stop what you are doing that is wrong, repent and become good citizens of this country and work to earn an honest living rather than trying to live off other people’s sweat.”
He urged escapees on the run to surrender to police and make it easier on themselves, their families and the community at large.
