SPORTS Minister Justin Tkatchenko is appalled at the stance taken by the University of Papua New Guinea.

Tkathenko said he had received a letter from the Pacific Games Committee (PGA) stating the university’s refusal to let PGA and other stakeholders hold sporting competitions and training on its premises.

“I am totally appalled at the lack of consideration of given to the PGA and the athletes,” Tkatchenko said.

“The University of Papua New Guinea is the single biggest beneficiary of the Pacific Games funding with the construction of the Games village and the renovation of its dining hall.”

Tkatchenko said UPNG would be the direct recipient of over K300m through these infrastructural developments.

He reminded UPNG that the Pacific Games were of national importance as directed by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill andt all government stakeholders were encouraged to assist the PGA and athletes wherever necessary.

He urged UPNG to reconsider its decision and do its part to realise the government’s desires to make the best and most successful the region had ever seen.
