SPORTS Minister Justin Thatchenko has congratulated the PNG men’s soccer team, Kapuls, for their “unbelievable” effort against champions, the New Zealand All Whites, in the final of OFC Nations Cup on Saturday.
He said the team may have lost but they were truly champions for the country.
“The performance of the PNG men’s football team over the past two weeks in the OFC Nations Cups has certainly raised the bar for football in the country and is a start for better things to come,” Tkatchenko said.
“Despite losing to New Zealand in a penalty shootout in the final, the team has taken a lot of positives out of their efforts and should hold their heads up high.”
“The key is having the right management and administration to look after the players and the code to make it successful.
“We are now seeing that in football, the minister said.
He thanked the PNG Football Association president David Chung and his administration for delivering a successful tournament.
Tkatchenko pledged to continue to his support to the sport to help it develop in the years to come.
PNGFA president David Chung, said he was proud of the achievement. “Success does not come overnight,” Chung said.
